Passive cooling is not such a new thing.

This concrete wall directs air into a grain cellar, no matter which way the wind blows. It was built, in front of my eyes, by one man with a wooden formwork and a donkey loaded with limestone and sand.

When I first saw him, he was scraping a used tin can on a rock step to remove the lid, so he could use it as a scoop. I whizzed back to my hotel room to get him my fold up can opener that I carried in my wallet. By the time I had returned, he was using his scoop to mix the concrete.

"Note to self. Watch and learn." I said.

He burned the limestone then poured water on the hot rock and pounded it with a wooden staff to make cement, mixed it with sand, poured it into the wooden framework and waited for that panel to set.

Over the course of a day, he made about eight of these panels, and the next day he started building the wall.
Looking around the city (Jaiselmere) I could see hundreds of such buildings, all on the ground level, well shaded, holding the grain and dry goods in a cool, dry, well ventilated space.
